About
This project was designed to meet a brief requiring a functional stool or bench that folds to under 100mm in thickness. It was created for users seeking a portable, sturdy alternative to flimsy market options for travel or outdoor use.
The stool’s two main highlights are its simplicity: it folds and packs in a single movement when lifted by the handle and locks in place with one mechanism. Both functions rely entirely on the seat’s weight on the legs and the downward pull of gravity.
Through this project I learned the importance of material choice—while teak is durable and weather-resistant, it proved too heavy. A lighter wood or plywood would have been more practical. Though the stool failed due to hidden rot, the process gave me valuable hands-on experience with woodworking, joinery, tools, and identifying quality materials.
