About
This project was designed to meet a brief requiring a functional stool or bench that folds down to under 100mm in thickness. It was created for users who want a portable, sturdy alternative to flimsy market options when traveling or spending a day outdoors.
The stool’s two main highlights are its simplicity: it folds and packs in a single movement when lifted by the handle, and it locks in place with one mechanism. Both functions rely entirely on the weight of the seat on the legs and the downward pull of gravity.
Through this project I learned the importance of choosing the right materials—while teak is durable and weather-resistant, it proved too heavy. A lighter wood or plywood would have been more practical. Despite the stool eventually failing due to hidden rot, the process gave me valuable hands-on experience with woodworking, joinery, tools, and identifying quality materials
